8 Ways to Gain Momentum While Setting Goals

8 Ways to Gain Momentum While Setting Goals

The new year is a great time to hit the reset button so you can clear your mind and revitalize your life. However, studies have shown that 80% of people give up on their New Year’s resolutions by February. If this sounds like you, it isn’t because you are weak or lack willpower. The reason most people fall short of their goals or give up on them completely is that they lose momentum.

So what does it take to keep your momentum high when it comes to goal setting? Your success depends largely on how you approach the goal. Most of us rush into completing a goal and want to get to the end as fast as possible. Part of this is because we live in a society that promises instant and fast results. However, long-term success requires taking consistent small actions to achieve a large outcome.

No matter what your goals are this year, attaining a healthy mindset is an important step in this mission. How we perceive ourselves tends to reflect what may be happening inside, but we can’t force our minds to complete tasks we know will get us to the finish line.

Our mindsets and the choices we make each day are what help us evolve and grow. Here are eight actions you can take to keep your momentum high.

1. Be Specific

It’s one thing to say you want to run a marathon. It’s another thing to break up the mileage into a sustainable training plan. This mentality applies to any goal you want to achieve.  If you want to write a book, it’s not possible to write an entire first draft in one day. If you want to lose 20 pounds, it won’t happen in one week. This is why setting small, specific, and measurable goals along the way is so important. Many people give up and feel like failures because they try to do too much at once. The reality is any goal takes time and consistency to achieve.

When I wrote my books, Clean Skin From Within and Natural Beauty Reset, I had to meet deadlines and make progress little by little over the course of several months. I wrote a specific number of words daily until I accomplished what I wanted to share with my readers. I can’t imagine what would have happened if I tried to do it in one week!

2. Keep a Daily Journal

Writing is a cathartic activity. It helps you take what’s stuck in your mind and get it out of your body and onto the paper. You can use your journal to record daily successes, what you are grateful for, the frustrations you have, and your vision of the future. Don’t hold back on the pages. Let everything out and you will be surprised at what you can uncover with this practice – and it will keep your momentum and progress at the top of your mind.

3. Take a Step-by-Step Approach

Most people overestimate what they can accomplish in a month, six months, or 1 year. Making too many goals at the same time can set you up for failure and lead to frustration. Mix up your goals with one or two big ones that are really important to you – and mix in a few fun ones too. Goals don’t have to be Mt. Everest-sized to be meaningful. For example, maybe you’re afraid of getting your first mammogram but know it’s important. Make scheduling the appointment and attending it one of your goals.

Setting fun goals is a great way to boost your confidence. Reading a certain number of books each month, slowly swapping toxic conventional skin care products for natural alternatives, or planning a vacation you’ve always wanted to go on are a few examples of low-pressure goals that will bring more joy into your life.

4. Create an Invigorating Morning Routine

What you do in the morning sets up your entire day. Start your mornings with invigorating breathwork and yoga. Full yogic breathing is revitalizing and helps alleviate stress and stimulates circulation around your vital organs. Go for a short walk to wake up your body. Morning is also a great time to write in your journal, reflect on your goals, and practice gratitude. Create a routine that works for you, and you’ll find it has a powerful, mood-boosting impact.

6. Celebrate Milestones

Take time to celebrate your wins. It’s essential to reward yourself as you make progress, as this can help boost your momentum – especially if your goal is going to take a long time to achieve.  The reward does not have to be extravagant, but it should feel like a little luxury!

Here are some ideas for celebrating your milestones:

6. Share Your Goals With Others

Sharing your goals with people you care about helps with accountability. You need a personal support group that will cheer you on to stay motivated – but this support group should also keep it real if you are not making progress. You can even ask someone to be your accountability buddy and work toward the same goals together.

It’s important to note that friends and family aren’t always the best support group though. You may want to seek out a coach to make progress – whether that is a life coach, a health coach, a business coach, or something else. A coach is someone who is on your side and will help you make progress, but they will also give you ideas to step it up when needed.

7. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness practices can bring about a sense of calm and are easy to incorporate into your day. This is especially important if you’re doing something outside of your comfort zone. Trying something new is challenging – yet it’s important for growth and well-being. Mindfulness practices boost your mood. So while your mood is elevated, let go of your inhibitions and step out of your comfort zone!

8. Be Okay with Setbacks

Guess what? Nobody is perfect, no matter what social media says. I know it isn’t easy to accept, but to achieve your goals, you must be willing to fall a few times. Being graceful with yourself is what will ultimately help you get to the end of the road. Accept that “bad days” are normal. Getting back up over and over again is what keeps your momentum going.

Overall, creating momentum requires a full-body approach – mindset is one piece of the puzzle. We can’t change our mindsets when our bodies are out of sync. How we choose to nourish our bodies, how we move, what we’re applying to our skin, being in touch with our breathing, and taking time to unwind all provide a strong foundation for creating what you want and being the truest version of yourself.
