Top 10 Skin Care Dos and Don’ts

Have you ever wondered how to achieve true, natural beauty?

In the modern world, there’s no shortage of skin care advice. From the internet to advertisements, magazines, and even skin care brands, there’s plenty of suggestions and solutions that promise to fix your skin quickly.

It can be tempting to give in to those promises, but the real secret to achieving true radiance and beautiful skin is to nurture your health from the inside out and be gentle with your skin. When you do this, you can take extra steps that not only support your internal health but your skin too.

To achieve clean, radiant, younger-looking skin, here are my top 10 skin care dos and don’ts. With simple shifts, you can make your skin and body healthier at the same time.

Don’t ignore the root cause

Many people see skin issues and try to clear them by not addressing the true root cause of skin issues. By identifying the root cause, you can create a plan that specifically pinpoints skin issues. I have found there are usually six root causes that contribute to skin issues: inflammation, microbiome disturbance, oxidative damage, blood sugar issues, nutritional deficiencies, and hormonal imbalances. If you’re unsure of your root causes, take The Skin Quiz to find out your skin type and what factors might be contributing to your skin issues.

Do clean skin with the correct pH

Have you ever cleansed your skin, and it was squeaky clean afterward? Don’t use stripping cleansers. Squeaky clean skin means your cleanser is too drying and the pH is too high. This is an issue because it can strip your skin of its natural oils and cause microbiome disturbances. The pH of our skin does best in a 4 to 4.5 pH range with skin care products.

Plus, your skin can receive healing nutrients topically. It’s important to choose a cleanser that has moisturizing and nourishing ingredients that is also pH-balanced, like the Daily Essentials Step 1 – CLEAR: Gentle Cleanser

Don’t exfoliate too much

“More is more” is common in the beauty industry in many ways. However, when it comes to exfoliation, this is a big mistake. Over-exfoliating can trigger an excessive inflammatory response within the dermis – the second layer of your skin.

Periodic, gentle exfoliation is beneficial to your skin. Gentle exfoliation should never feel like you’re “sanding” your face. After exfoliating, your skin should not feel dry or tight.  To properly exfoliate, use very little pressure and minimize friction by applying water as a light lubricant. Then, massage the Pearl and Rose Petal Facial Exfoliant in soft circular motions and let the scrub do the work.

Do wash your face twice daily

Believe it or not, there are some people out there who may avoid washing their faces. This is especially common for people with extremely sensitive skin. It’s important to wash your face at least twice daily to remove debris, impurities, and pollution. This includes removing your makeup.

Don’t sleep in your makeup. While you’re sleeping, your skin’s blood flow increases to start repairing the skin and rebuild collagen. When you sleep in makeup, it inhibits your skin from performing its natural renewal functions.

Don’t use toxic sunscreen

Every so often, a news story breaks about toxic ingredients hidden in sunscreens. The truth is, no matter what these news stories are saying, many sunscreens have toxins like oxybenzone in them. Oxybenzone actually absorbs UV rays and can cause skin allergies and disrupt hormones. Furthermore, oxybenzone is toxic to coral and marine life. So when you’re choosing a sunscreen, make sure it is a zinc oxide-based sunscreen and free of toxins like oxybenzone.

Do use plant-based oils

One big skin care mistake people make is that they use occlusive ingredients when they are sleeping or while they work out. Occlusive ingredients trap particles in your skin. These can clog pores with dirt, sweat, and other impurities, which leads to acne.

Many occlusive ingredients are found in makeup products, such as high-coverage foundation. They’re also found in skin care products. Common occlusive ingredients include petrolatum, silicones, lanolin, dimethicone, and mineral oil. Don’t use occlusive ingredients – and use plant-based oils instead.

If you’re new to plant-based oils, you can’t go wrong with the Daily Essentials Step 4 – ENHANCE: Glow Boost because it is a blend of organic oils that contain antioxidants, fatty acids, and other nourishing, skin-loving compounds. So if you want glowing skin, opt for something natural.

Don’t under-moisturize

Your skin needs a layer of moisture to serve as a protective barrier. Without a layer of moisture, your skin is more susceptible to redness, dryness, and even inflammation. In addition, moisturizing the skin properly helps manage sebum production. Unmoisturized skin also tends to look older than it really is and shows more fine lines and wrinkles.

Unfortunately, some people with oily skin believe they don’t need moisturizer. This is a common skin care myth. You should moisturize in the morning and at night to hydrate and plump your skin. Use a moisturizer that has the proper pH to support healthy skin, like the Daily Essentials Step 3 – RENEW: Enriched Moisturizer

Do reduce your exposure to toxins

Toxins aren’t good for your skin or your health. Reducing toxins is essential, and you can do this through lifestyle changes and by swapping out skin care products, make-up products, and items in your home with non-toxic options. Why avoid them? Certain toxins are known to disrupt hormones. Plus, most skin care companies regularly use ingredients linked to endocrine disruption, reproductive harm, and other health issues.

You can reduce your exposure to toxins in your home and your skin care products. This is important because your skin care products don’t just sit on your skin – they penetrate it and can end up in your bloodstream. Choose topical antioxidants that you don’t have to worry about instead, like the Daily Essentials Step 2 – NOURISH: Antioxidant Serum. It contains natural ingredients that instantly hydrate and nourish to fight aging, environmental stress, and inflammation – without toxins!

Don’t pick at your skin

I know it’s tempting, but one of the biggest skin care don’ts is do not pick at your skin. Picking, scratching, and popping pimples on your own can cause significant damage. This includes open wounds, dark spots, infections, and even permanent scarring. You will never solve your skin problems by trying to remove them aggressively. Instead, use a gentle skin care system like The Spa Dr. Daily Essentials that promotes your most vibrant and radiant skin with natural ingredients. Use this while you search for the root causes of your skin issues.

Do practice a healthy lifestyle

For vibrant health and beautiful skin, it is essential to make lifestyle choices that promote your well-being. Start by working on your diet using the plan I outline in my book, Clean Skin from Within. You don’t have to be perfect to be successful. Give yourself grace and start from where you are with what you have.

Another important lifestyle change to make is to reduce stress and spend more time practicing self-care. Find a self-care ritual or activity that you enjoy, such as hiking in nature, going for a run, swimming, yoga, gardening, painting – or another hobby that you love!

Finally, make sure you get enough sleep. Adequate sleep helps your body rejuvenate itself and restore its natural functions every night.

As you can see, there is no quick-fix to beautiful skin. Knowing these dos and don’ts can help you make the best decisions for your skin – and ultimately shift your overall health. By making long-term, sustainable changes, you can get the smooth, supple, and clean skin you desire.
